Urbanization Scenario in Maharashtra
Maharashtra is the second-most populous state in India as well as the second-most populous country subdivision in the world. Of 231 countries across the world, only 10 countries (China, India, United States of America, Indonesia, Brazil, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Russia and Japan) have a population that is larger than Maharashtra State.

Population density in 8 districts is higher than the state average. While in Mumbai (suburban) population density increased to 1552 person per sq km, it decreased in Mumbai to 1223 person per sq km between 2001 and 2011.
Two districts, Mumbai and Mumbai (suburban) have 100% of their population in urban areas while two other districts, Gadchiroli and Sindhudurg, have less than 15% of their population living in urban areas.
The population of Greater Mumbai Urban Agglomeration (UA) is 18.41 million, which is the largest Urban Agglomeration (UA) in the country in terms of population. Maharashtra has six urban agglomeration (UA)/cities, Greater Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Nashik, Vasai Virar city and Aurangabad, having population of one million and above in the state.
